Shamrockin'—A Letter from Florian

We’ve had a lot of good ideas over the years. Not all ideas are created equal, however. Some worked out. Some didn’t. One stroke of genius came before our first issue was even printed in 2001. We called it a Shamrock Tour®. You know and love them. This

How to Plan a Motorcycle Tour—A Letter from Florian

Planning a motorcycle tour has never been easier—or more complicated. Back in the good old days, all we needed was a paper map and a halfway decent reason to ride. We’d then figured the rest of it out as the odometer ticked by. It was as simple as

The Process—A Letter from Florian

At some point in our lives, we were all (probably) taught not to judge others. Thanks to my profession, I’ve made friends from all over the world and all walks of life. The age difference between me and some of my friends is counted in decades. Some are much

My Friend Doug—A Letter from Florian

I’m not a mechanic. Many years ago, after reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I came to terms with it. Patience is something I have to work on. I know I’ll never have enough of it to slip into blue overalls full-time. Although I’m

It’s All About Adventure—A Letter from Florian

The last installment of our Route 66 experience was recently published. We’d wanted to ride the Mother Road for a while, but the centennial finally brought the motivation to make it happen. On top of that, it was the 30-year anniversary of my parents’ Route 66 trip. With

Friends in Odd Places—A Letter from Florian

All of us probably have too much stuff. Whether your material possessions have simply accumulated over time or you’re a little too trigger-happy late at night, we have more than we need. I’m still entertained by the spring and fall yard sales I see but rarely participate

Recreating Magic!—A Letter from Florian

Next year, Route 66 is celebrating its centennial. The world’s most famous highway is turning 100. In anticipation of this milestone, Marisa, Caleb, and I set out last year to follow the iconic road’s 2,448 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica. I’m proud of the level

The Next Episode—A Letter from Florian

Looking through our archive to find early photos of RoadRUNNER, it is difficult not to get emotional. Some photos immediately transport me back to not just the moment, but the whole day. I remember where we rode and how we settled the “Where are we riding today?” debate over breakfast.

25 Years—A Letter From Florian

Dear Reader, It is with great pride that I announce RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel is celebrating its 25th year. As an independent, family-owned publishing company, we’ve always considered you, our readers, our extended family. We have ridden together through some seriously great times and also some hard

This time of the year is always one of reflection. It’s just natural after the whirlwind of a busy travel season. Last winter, I got ants in my pants and signed myself up for a whole bunch of trips. They were all epic, but with so much time on

Escape & Explore—A Letter from Florian

Each year, we send out our reader survey to learn more about you and your riding habits. One of the questions asks you to rank the reasons why you ride. Consistently, the number one answer is “the desire to escape and explore.” I second that. It has been a great

Planes, Trains, and Motorcycles—A Letter From Florian

Traveling to attend new motorcycle press launches often requires some serious travel. I don’t know many people willing to fly halfway around the world to ride a motorcycle for a day. My usual rule is that I want to stay at a location at least twice as long as

Community—A Letter from Florian

Riding a motorcycle represents the ultimate freedom, yet most of us crave human interaction. The lone wolf heading into the sunset far from civilization doesn’t tell an accurate story. Sure, many of us prefer to ride alone, but as soon as the lone wolf stops, the human connections are

Technology Ebbs and Flows—A Letter From Florian

Not that many years ago, every time I ventured out on a motorcycle tour for the magazine, I brought along a dizzying array of tech. Most importantly (at the time), my Garmin had the planned route, and if something came up along the way, it didn’t take me long
