Planes, Trains, and Motorcycles—A Letter From Florian

Planes, Trains, and Motorcycles—A Letter From Florian

Traveling to attend new motorcycle press launches often requires some serious travel. I don’t know many people willing to fly halfway around the world to ride a motorcycle for a day. My usual rule is that I want to stay at a location at least twice as long as it takes me to get there. That said, it’s impossible to satisfy that rule when a new motorcycle is presented.

I’m spending more time on the plane than in the saddle. But that’s fine, because we usually take new motorcycles on longer tours later to give them a thorough real-life test. Plus, it’s just part of the job to keep you informed of the latest models. I’m taking one for the team here!

Spending so much time on an airplane, I always think of my grandparents, who—as of a few years ago—were still peeved how people fly these days. You know, not all dressed up. I can only imagine my grandfather in his suit and Italian loafers and my grandmother wearing a fancy dress, jewelry and all.

It’s a stark contrast to how people fly today, which is mostly plastic athleisure garb. I can’t really blame anyone, though. Airplane comfort has all but disappeared and there’s nothing glamorous about flying. It’s just a matter of making it to your destination with your health and sanity intact.

The cherry for me, of course, is that I get to swing a leg over a brand-new motorcycle and ride with other knowledgeable and skilled riders. I’m still testing and taking notes on the new model, but I also thoroughly enjoy bombing around with fellow journalists.

Motorcycles are by far the most fun way to get around. They say that two wheels are actual modes of transportation in most of the world, while in the West, they’re just a hobby.

That always bothers me. I realize I have transportation options, but my first choice is always a motorcycle. As long as it’s not raining, I’m riding to the office. I spend more time commuting than going on tours. That’s just how it works out, and I have a feeling I’m not the only one.

As usual, your July/August 2024 WEB subscription is packed with motorcycle trips across the country, informative chronicles, and honest motorcycle and product reviews.

Motorcycles often have a reputation for being loud, but they can also take you to quiet places, as our Weston, West Virginia Shamrock Tour shows.

You’ll also get to familiarize yourself with the mirrored infotainment systems and learn why Scotland is a great place to test the new Triumph Tiger 1200.

Of course, there are plenty of other WEB exclusive stories, too, and we hope you enjoy your read.

Safe travels,
