The Safest Haunted Town in America—Sleepy Hollow, NY
You’re walking through town in the dead of night when you hear a sound, as if an engine revving in the distance. You look down the road and there, on top of a hill against the pale full moon, you see a motorcycle popping a wheelie.
But to your horror, the rider has nary a helmet or head.
I wonder why no one has filmed an adaptation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow where the Headless Horseman is the Headless Biker. If it was made, though, it would have to take place in its namesake town in New York state.
Curiously enough, Sleepy Hollow, NY, wasn’t called that in 1820 when Washington Irving wrote his famous short story. In fact, North Tarrytown, founded in the late 17th century, didn’t take on the name of Sleepy Hollow until 1996, largely in homage to the story that made it famous.
Nonetheless, the legend of the Headless Horseman is alive and well in the town. Due to the story’s enduring legacy, Sleepy Hollow is often listed among the most haunted places in the world.
