George Washington Heritage Trail

The three counties of West Virginia’s eastern panhandle (Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan) were where young George Washington spent much of his time as a surveyor. Later, he returned here to enjoy the region’s scenic splendor and soak in the hot springs.
Many of America’s seminal historical events occurred in this corner of West Virginia, and the George Washington Heritage Trail provides an immersive riding experience through it all. It’s a fun ride, so ladies and gentlemen—start your engines!
The tour route covers approximately 130 miles. I’ve modified it slightly from the official George Washington Heritage Trail route, so you can experience several of the best motorcycling roads in these three counties without bypassing any major points of interest.
Both Shanghai Rd over Sleepy Creek Mountain and Chestnut Hill Rd have steep gradients and tight curves. They are a lot of fun, but could be challenging for less experienced riders. The roads are, generally, in good condition.
