Discover the Fun and Characterful Tail of the Gecko
Motorcyclists love a good reptilian tail. Just look at all the riders flocking to experience the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee.
But you don’t need a mythical beast to have a good time on a motorcycle. Sometimes, a more unassuming reptile will do just fine.
Like a gecko.
The Tail of the Gecko is a nearly 20-mile collection of country roads snaking through south-central Florida. Located between Wauchula Rd/SR 62 in the south and Balm-Picnic Rd/CR 672 in the north, its most distinctive features are its turns and curves.
No, it doesn’t have 318 curves packed into 11 miles like its more threatening sibling. But we’re talking about Florida, and in those terms, the Tail of the Gecko is about as curvy as it gets.
The southern section of the road features an assortment of sweepers to entertain you. As you navigate the turns, you can enjoy the rural Florida views with white fences and horses in their pastures—and sometimes being ridden on the roads, so give them a wide berth.
As you proceed northward, the road straightens out into what you might expect from the Sunshine State. Don’t get complacent, though, as the sweeping turns become tight 90-degree turns that require careful riding.
You’ll even get to over a couple of small, tree-lined hills. They’re not huge, but nonetheless present a rare treat in these parts.
