Florida’s Green Mountain Scenic Byway
The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is a 36-mile series of roads in central Florida that showcases the state’s history, culture, and natural beauty. Close enough to Orlando for easy access, yet far enough away to escape the theme park hustle and bustle, the roads and landscapes can make you forget you’re a mere 12 miles from Disney World.
At the byway’s southern end, you’ll start in the historical town of Winter Garden, FL. Once a regional orange-producing hub, a series of hard winters moved citrus farming south and Winter Garden’s economy shifted to tourism. In the city’s downtown, you’ll find a smorgasbord of shops and restaurants along the brick-paved Plant Street.
Plant St, which becomes CR 438, is the first leg of the byway’s southern section. Once you get outside Winter Garden’s plant nurseries and newly minted sub-divisions, you’ll find yourself in an open country of fields and nature preserves as the road makes its way around the southern and western shores of Lake Apopka through curves and across rolling hills.
