Escape the city’s hustle and bustle into New Jersey’s backcountry. It’s not nicknamed the Garden State for nothing! Ride through beautiful farmland, forests, and past too many lakes to count. Crossing the Delaware River, this route pokes into Pennsylvania and New York countryside.

As with most places on the East Coast, if you want a view you’ll have to do some climbing—or find a path that leads to an overlook like that at Sunrise Mountain. The majority of this City Escape follows roads through forests and farmland.

Points of Interest
Stokes State Forest
Hike along the Appalachian Trail to 1,653-foot Sunrise Mountain for the ultimate view, or ride the narrow, unmarked road to the rustic stone pavilion at the top.
Dingmans Creek Trail
Take the short and easy 0.4-mile stroll along this flat boardwalk trail. It leads through a thick, pristine hemlock ravine, with Silverthread Falls at the beginning and Dingmans Falls, Pennsylvania’s second highest waterfall, at the end.
Reber River Trips
Experience the Delaware River on a raft, kayak, canoe, or tube. Let the brightly colored hippie bus take you to the launching point.
Pond Eddy Bridge
This 521-foot petit truss bridge spans the Delaware River. It was built in 1903 of wood and steel, but over the years has deteriorated so much that plans are underway for replacement. Pull over to take in this historic site and the peaceful surrounding scenery.
