City Escape: McAlester, Oklahoma

This City Escape route showcases western Oklahoma’s relatively lesser-known waterscapes. In addition, you get to enjoy rural cruising and carve through woods where robbers and murderers lurked.

Roaring north out of McAlester, US 69 quickly takes you to the shores of Lake Eufaula. You’ll cross several bridges, some with very long spans, that allow you to take in the waterside views straight from the saddle.

If you’d like to dismount, though, Lake Eufaula is a great place for fishing, swimming, and boating. Riders on dirt-capable bikes can pop off US 69 to the gravel roads that run parallel to the bigger highway.
