Cherohala Skyway—The Most Expensive Road in North Carolina

Cherohala Skyway—The Most Expensive Road in North Carolina

Spanning 43 miles of sweeping curves and high-elevation vistas, the Cherohala Skyway is one of the Southeast's most iconic scenic byways. Connecting Robbinsville, NC, to Tellico Plains, TN, the road winds through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests—hence the name “Chero-hala.” Built over the course of 34 years and completed in 1996, the road cost over $100 million to construct.

The Cherohala Skyway is a peaceful, high-mountain alternative to the often-busy Tail of the Dragon, which sits just a short ride away to the north. Riders are treated to a continuous ribbon of smooth pavement, high-speed sweepers, and dramatic elevation changes that crest at over 5,300 feet. The road offers panoramic views, thick mountain forests, and misty overlooks, making it a visual feast year-round, but especially in the fall. The well-maintained road surface and expansive sight lines make it a dream for motorcyclists of all skill levels.

This road encourages you to ride with rhythm—no need to rush. Pull-offs are frequent and well-placed, inviting you to stop, breathe the mountain air, and take in the scenery. Be prepared for temperature shifts due to elevation, and keep an eye out for fog in the early mornings and late afternoons.

The road might have cost $100 million to build, but it offers countless visitors million-dollar views every year. I’d say that’s a pretty good return on investment. The Cherohala Skyway is one road that should be on your riding bucket list.

Points of Interest

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Located near Robbinsville, the old-growth Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest preserves giant poplars and ancient hardwoods, some of which are over 400 years old. For those who like to hike, a short loop trail leads through a quiet, cathedral-like grove. For dual sport riders, National Forest Rd/Trans America Trail is a fun gravel road that parallels the skyway through the forest.

Santeetlah Overlook

The highest stopping point on the Skyway at 5,390 feet, the Santeetlah Overlook offers stunning views of the distant Smoky Mountains. It’s a must-stop for photos and a deep breath of mountain air. Of course, most of the pull-offs along the skyway are breathtaking, so it really says something about this one when it stands out from the crowd.

Indian Boundary Lake

Just off the Tennessee end of the skyway, the peaceful Indian Boundary Lake is a great spot to relax, picnic, or take a short hike around the water. The area has restrooms, picnic tables, and easy walking trails. Traffic on the lake is limited to non-motorized vessels, making it a serene place to fish, swim, or kayak.

Bald River Falls

A short detour off the Tellico Plains end of the skyway, this 90-foot waterfall is visible right from the road. It’s one of the most scenic and accessible waterfalls in the region. The road there is paved, and plenty of parking is available. You can swim at the base of the falls if you don’t mind very cold water!

Best Time to Travel

Fall is the crown jewel for riding the Cherohala, thanks to crisp air and spectacular foliage from late September through October. Summer offers warm temps and long days, although morning fog is common. Spring blooms can also be beautiful, but winter may bring ice and road closures at higher elevations.
