Review: MotoPumps Garmin Zumo XT & XT2 Locking Mount

Some items require more security than others—like an expensive GPS unit. A deft thief can quickly snatch your Garmin unit while you step into a gas station. The company, for some reason, doesn’t offer any anti-theft solutions for the new Zumos, despite the little lever on the top taking a second to open.

MotoPumps came out with a mount, machined from billet aluminum and Delrin thermoplastic, that’s sleek and offers the first line of defense. The lock is a simple solution that prevents releasing the GPS unit from its cradle. MotoPumps uses a locking pin and key (reminiscent of the funky Garmin key from a decade ago) that goes in the back of the mount and immobilizes the release lever. This mount provides enough security for the time it takes to run into the gas station, sit down for lunch, or hike to that beautiful waterfall. At night, though, it’s still best to bring your Garmin inside.

Installation is straightforward, with the crossbar clamps available in 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, and 22mm sizes. Currently, the clamp uses two bolts secured from the back, which in some cases require the removal of the windshield, as it did on my Yamaha Ténéré 700. Once the little clamp is in place, the plate simply bolts on. Next up is Garmin’s OEM powered cradle. With the GPS unit in the mount, the locking pin slides in first, and then the key lets you fasten the pin. Both the pin and key are about two inches long, so it’s best if you have nothing blocking the mount’s right side.

Good to Know

The antenna of the Garmin Group Ride Radio interferes with the lock, so this mount doesn’t work with it. MotoPumps’ kit comes with two keys, but you can buy a replacement one for $15. The numerous mounting holes let you mount your GPS horizontally or vertically. The 12mm and 14mm clamps are height adjustable in three positions, while the 16mm and 22mm clamps have two positions. If you already have a similar mount, you can buy MotoPumps’ Zumo XT Security Lock, which is a plate with the locking mechanism.

This mount is small yet strong, 100% weather and corrosion resistant, and takes just minutes to install. It’s a sensible investment for an expensive navigation tool that you really don’t want to lose.
