Review: Klim Krios Pro Helmet
Venturing full-time into the off-road realms astride my KTM 500 EXC-F, it seemed only fitting to trade my street-oriented helmet for the Klim Krios Pro. After five years of long-distance riding and experimenting with various mid to top-tier brands, the call of the off-road experience led me to don this high-end bad boy on my noggin.
The Klim Krios Pro features a durable hand-laid carbon fiber shell for lightweight comfort and balanced riding. The helmet offered decent ventilation in temperatures north of 80 degrees with its adjustable chin and forehead vents for customizable airflow. The pinlock-ready, anti-scratch shield provided a clear vision, while the photochromic Transitions face shield adapted quickly to bright light conditions.
However, the shield took longer to transition back to clarity when moving from sunlight into darker areas—a tunnel, for example—and it's slightly too dark for nighttime riding.
Thanks to its nifty magnetic design, the Fid-lock strap closure system allowed me to conveniently fasten the helmet, even with gloves. However, achieving a snug fastening under the chin proved tricky.
The helmet's versatility shines through its four adjustable “ride modes”: street, adventure, dirt, and trail. With the ability to add goggles, remove the face shield, and more, they cater to various rider preferences and add enhanced adaptability..
The Klim Krios Pro's aerodynamics and liner system provided a quiet ride, ideal for long journeys in Baja California. Its visor and spoiler enhanced aerodynamic stability, further elevating comfort and performance. ECE/DOT certification guarantees safety standards are met.
The liner's antimicrobial properties and moisture-wicking capabilities maintained freshness and comfort during extended rides. Adjustable vents provided excellent airflow, enhancing my comfort in Baja South and Death Valley when temperatures soared.
The Krios Pro was also compatible with our Cardo PackTalk (and the Sena 10U) for connectivity. However, I'd prefer it if the helmet's intercom system was integrated into the back interior for a sleeker look, similar to a previous Sena offering.
The quick-release, no-tool shield and visor changes made maintenance on the fly a breeze, reflecting the practicality of the helmet. As a full-time adventure rider, I find it evident that other real-world riders have rigorously tested and revised the Krios Pro, giving it the stamp of approval for its performance in diverse conditions.
Not for Quirky Skulls
Aesthetically, the Klim Krios Pro is pleasing. It comes in many colorways and designs, from vibrant and bold to understated classics, offering a style to suit most riders’ tastes.
Next time, though, I'd choose a more eye-catching color option than the matte black. Black helmets tend to feel warmer in hot weather, they’re less visible among other traffic users, and they don't pop in photos or videos.
Like anything that requires crying long and hard once, the Krios Pro comes with a premium price tag, making it a long-term investment for serious adventure riders.
The helmet's size range promises a snug fit on most folks' heads. I've encountered a personal challenge where two of the helmet's inside ridges caused hot spots and unwanted pressure on my forehead due to my particular head shape, leaving red marks in my hairline. It was a reminder that the standard mold of the helmet shape may not be universally compatible with all skulls.
The Klim Krios Pro Helmet has been a good companion for the 4,000 miles clocked on my current trip through the western American wilderness. Features like the Koroyd technology, carbon fiber construction, and ride modes enhance the adventure riding experience.
While the price might deter budget-conscious riders, the helmet's performance, comfort, and safety features make it a top choice for those prioritizing quality. As I rack up the miles, the Krios Pro is the best lid I've worn for this riding application.
