UNRally 2024: ‘An Experiment in Intentional Disorganization’

The UNRally isn't your typical “red velvet rope” exclusive affair. It's more like that hard-to-find, cool underground bar, waiting to be discovered by those hungry for adventure. Celebrating its ninth iteration over eight evolving years, this gathering, founded by Pete Day, is intentionally limited to 200 participants to preserve its intimate spirit.

With details, like event dates and the western U.S. location, kept hush-hush to maintain its essence, it's clear that this isn't just another event—it's a convergence of free spirits bound by a radiant love for camaraderie.

Freedom of Self-Expression

Drawing inspiration from the Burning Man’s ethos, the UNRally invites “UNRats” (attendees) to shed their inhibitions and embrace a weekend of self-expression and shared experiences. Here, amidst the brutal beauty of the Great Basin—complete with deserts, mountains, and hot springs close by—participants commune on a dry lake bed with an array of human-powered contraptions, one-wheelers, neon-lit vehicles, and towering “mutants.”

This event is not about adhering to health and safety regulations or commercial agendas. Instead, it's about fostering deep and meaningful conversations and expanding the boundaries of personal and collective adventure. It’s a space for “danger fun” where adults unleash their inner child while children live their best lives.

Imagine a wild, dusty landscape where the homemade avocado margaritas flow freely, fires crackle warmly under starlit skies, and every ride promises epic vistas and untamed exploration. The UNRally takes place in one of the least light-polluted spots in the lower 48.

UNRats, equipped with nothing but their adventurous spirits and a penchant for the alternative, come together to create a temporary oasis of creativity and connection. Camp dues include morning coffee with breakfast pancakes, plus two locally catered evening meals.

Guiding Principles

The UNRally is underpinned by four principles to guide everyone’s actions. The first is “Active Participation,” where everyone contributes to the event's vibrancy through creativity and collaboration, ensuring a weekend filled with resonating experiences.

“Leave No Trace” underscores a commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Great Basin. It urges participants to minimize their impact, pick up any MOOP (matter out of place), and uphold environmental stewardship by packing all waste and leaving the environment more pristine than they found it.

“Self-reliance” is paramount in this remote setting. The organizers emphasize emergency preparedness and encourage riders to equip themselves with essential tools, such as satellite communicators and navigational aids. They also prioritize personal responsibility and mutual assistance, knowing that community support can make all the difference in the wilderness.

Finally, “Everyone's Invited” embraces inclusivity while acknowledging the necessity of ticketing to manage the group responsibly under BLM regulations. This approach ensures a diverse community of enthusiasts can join, contributing to a weekend focused on genuine connections and mutual encounters.

To buy tickets online, you'll need insider intel from someone attending to keep numbers manageable.

Into the Wild Unknown

By Saturday night, everyone was fully immersed in the experience, having been briefed on an unprecedented and spectacular way to disperse the entire assembly with their vehicles. This year's plan involved forming a large circle, and when a designated rider signaled “Go!” upon looping around, the group would radiate out into the desert.

As dusk settled over a dramatic desert sky, casting everything in warm amber light, the community gathered at the heart of the playa. A sense of camaraderie akin to warriors preparing for a legendary battle permeated the air.

The atmosphere sparked with anticipation, pulsated by electrifying dance beats that beckoned us into an all-night rave, where we moved as one in a synchronized scattering of unity and liberation. It was just another beautifully bonkers moment at the UNRally!

A Canvas for Shared Dreams

The UNRally unfolds and builds something special. When the dust storms rage through, it’s like a scene from a Mad Max movie. Next time, I might reconsider pitching a ground tent. The heaping dunes repeatedly blowing inside really made our tent the "Dome Sweet Dome."

For those seeking the visceral and visually striking, the UNRally beckons. It’s a place where the ordinary gives way to the extraordinary and participants become an integral part of an ever-evolving story. Whether you arrive on four, two, or no wheels at all, a poignant spirit of adventure awaits in the untamed wilderness.

Friendships are forged, the human spirit is fiercely celebrated, boundaries are pushed, and memories set to last a lifetime are made.

So, dust off your sense of adventure, pack an abundance of enthusiasm and even more stamina, and prepare to discover the UNRally. It defies all conventions and will leave its mark in more ways than one.
