Suzuki DR-Z Series Moves to the Next Generation with 2025 DR-Z4S/SM
Suzuki launched the DR-Z series in 2000 with the DR-Z400S dual sport motorcycle. The DR-Z400SM supermoto followed in 2005, offering a more street-oriented ride with the same basic platform.
Now, Suzuki has revealed the next generation of the DR-Z family. The 2025 DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM have been completely redesigned to offer modern performance while continuing their predecessors’ legacy.
The updates begin already with the bikes’ basic chassis. The DRZ-4S/SM feature an all-new twin-spar steel frame, which combines with a lightweight aluminum subframe and swingarm. Suzuki claims the new frame improves rigidity for enhanced handling.
Another upgrade is the engine. Both motorcycles come with an updated 398cc single-cylinder DOHC powerplant that produces 37.5 hp at 8,000 rpm and 27.9 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. With a series of tweaks and component upgrades, the engine promises to deliver a smooth power curve from the low end to the peak.
Together with the engine, the bikes feature a new 42mm ride-by-wire throttle body. To ease shifting with the five-speed transmission, the DRZ-4S/SM come out of the factory with the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) for smoother downshifts.
Suzuki has installed new suspension components on the motorcycles as well. The DR-Z4S boasts an inverted KYB cartridge fork with 11 travel inches and adjustability for compression and rebound damping. The rear KYB shock offers 11.6 inches of travel and can be fully adjusted.
Meanwhile, the street-oriented DR-Z4SM features the same KYB components with identical adjustability. Only the travel is different, with 10.2 inches in the front and 10.9 inches in the rear.
Naturally, the motorcycles feature different standard rubber. The DR-Z4S comes with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels shod with IRC GP-410 dual-purpose tires, while the DR-Z4SM’s 17-inch wheels are dressed in Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires.
The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS) found on both models brings to the table a slew of rider aids. This collection included three ride modes, adjustable traction control, and ABS. For controlling the SIRS and displaying information, the motorcycles have a new black-and-white LCD instrument panel.
In terms of style, both bikes cut an angular profile that looks good on both trail and asphalt. The appearance is partially thanks to the new, extremely slim 2.3-gallon fuel tanks.
The DR-Z4S will be available in Champion Yellow/Solid Special White and Solid Iron Gray, while the DR-Z4SM is painted Sky Gray or Solid Special White. At the time of writing, Suzuki has not yet announced the availability dates or base price for the motorcycles.
