Review: Rabbit Ears Motel—Steamboat Springs, CO

The sun was setting as I cruised into the small town of Steamboat Springs, CO, along US 40. It was late in the fall and most of the town had begun to shut down for the evening.

As I rounded the corner and began to think I would have a hard time finding a hotel for the night, I was welcomed by a large, pink neon bunny. I was in the right spot.

The Rabbit Ears Motel has been around for over 60 years and although the town once protested its sign as tacky, it has become an iconic part of Steamboat Springs since then. Today, the motel is a historical piece of the town and the original sign still stands.

After checking in, I dropped my luggage in the room and made my way down the street to the Old Town Pub, which has been around since 1904. Afterward, I popped back into the hotel for a quick change and went across the street to the Old Town Hot Springs.

There’s no better way to ease the aches of an all-day motorcycle ride than to soak in the healing mineral waters of a hot spring. It was the perfect ending to the day and, to top it off, I was able to purchase a discounted ticket since I was staying at Rabbit Ears.

Back at the motel, the no-frills room was comfortable and clean. I was able to park right next to the door of the room, so I didn’t have to carry my luggage far.

My balcony faced a nearby creek, which was a relaxing plus, and it took no time to fall asleep in the comfortable bed. Overall, the stay was peaceful, the staff was welcoming and informative, and I would absolutely stay here again if traveling through the area (which I fully intend to do).

The next morning, I woke to frost on the seat of my motorcycle. It was late September and the hotel was nearly empty, being past the high tourism season.

I was sure to stop at the front desk to purchase a magnet memento of the famous sign before I hopped on the bike for a chilly ride to breakfast.

Nearby Roads

Riders staying at Rabbit Ears Motel can enjoy exhilarating rides along the nearby scenic routes, such as US 40 from Steamboat Springs to Kremmling. This road offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The Colorado BDR also runs nearby, so off-road riders have the chance to stay here while on their route as well.

Food & Dining

Colorado is known for its fantastic culinary scene, even in the smaller mountain towns. When traveling through Colorado, keep your eyes peeled for elk dishes and anything with green chiles.

Old Town Pub is a Steamboat Springs staple and just as much of a historical sight as the Rabbit Ears Motel. They often have live music and serve a variety of local brews with their from-scratch menu. I sampled some smoked elk jalapeno sausage, which really hit the spot.
