Review: Hidden Springs Inn—Reserve, NM

If you blink, you just might ride right through the town of Reserve, NM, without even realizing it. That’s exactly what happened to me the night I planned to stay at the Hidden Springs Inn.

After an exceptionally long day of off-road motorcycling, it was well after dark by the time I arrived in Reserve. Nearly frozen, I pulled into the Black Gold market about 20 minutes before it closed for the night and was able to stock up on some rations of beef jerky and water.

After asking for directions to Hidden Springs, I realized I’d already passed it some seven miles back.

Our cozy room at the Hidden Springs Inn.

The local sheriff told me to watch closely for elk on the road at this time of night. After a quick backtrack, I made it to Hidden Springs Inn.

The small, single-story inn is made up of several adobe-style rooms which capture the essence of New Mexico. They are quite spacious and cozy, with plenty of room for laying out damp riding gear to dry.

The bed was incredibly comfortable. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow and, because of the darkness and silence in this area (there’s a certified dark sky zone nearby), I had a very deep and restful sleep.

The next morning, I walked over to the main office which doubles as a restaurant for breakfast. On my walk over, I waved at a man across the street working in the fields who asked where I was riding.

Lots of trail riding nearby, including Chloride Canyon.

The breakfast servings were generous and I was thankful I didn’t end up eating dinner the night before. Upon getting back to the motorcycle, I found a snack-sized pack of Oreo cookies resting on my seat.

“Trick or treat!” the man across the street yelled. It was October, after all, so I stashed my cookies in case I needed a mid-ride snack.

Overall, I had a fantastic experience at the Hidden Springs Inn. The staff was very friendly and accommodating despite my late check-in.

I wish I could have stayed another night to check out the surrounding area at a more leisurely pace. Alas, there were miles to ride to get to my next destination.
