Motorcycle Oil Demystified

Motorcycle Oil Demystified

Every motorcyclist knows an engine needs oil to function correctly. But not everyone is aware of the nearly bottomless rabbit hole that is the infamous “oil discussion.”

Case in point, certain internet forums will delete all posts on this topic since the discussions often get so out of hand, quickly devolving into hurling insults and obscenities. While it’s a subject as deep as the well from which we draw it, oil is not rocket science.

Let’s demystify this topic. I’m going to drill into each main aspect of why selecting the correct oil is vital for motorcycle performance.

What Does Engine Oil Do?

I want to start by saying that the vast majority of the time, it’s best practice to follow the recommendations in your owner's manual. It will tell you the oil weight and ratings you need, especially if there is a warranty involved.

Oil serves multiple critical functions within an engine. Its primary function is to provide lubrication, reducing friction between moving parts and thus preventing wear.

It also helps cool the engine by dissipating heat from components. In addition, oil cleans the engine, as it’s often infused with detergents and carries away debris as it flows, and prevents corrosion by forming a protective layer on metal surfaces.
