A Complete Guide to Motorcycle Cooling System Inspection & Maintenance
Many modern motorcycles utilize a liquid cooling system. These systems pump a water-based coolant through jackets in the cylinders, heads, and radiator to keep the engine at the ideal operating temperature.
Like everything else on your bike, though, this system requires regular maintenance. I’ll walk you through the basic inspection and maintenance steps to help your motorcycle stay cool.
Inspect the Cooling System
Just like with your oil, you must check a motorcycle’s coolant level regularly. As needed, top it up with the manufacturer's recommended coolant.
A small amount of coolant loss, especially in systems that don’t have a reservoir, is not much to worry about. However, if you’ve lost a lot of coolant or you smell it, it’s time to dig a little deeper.
Next, inspect your coolant hoses and connections. Make sure the hoses are in good condition and not swollen, cracked, or leaking in any way.
